When the valve feeds water from the inlet end, water flows through the needle valve into the main valve control chamber, and the outlet pressure acts through the conduit to the pilot valve. When the outlet pressure is higher than the pilot spring set value, the pilot valve is closed. The control room stops draining, at which time the main valve controls the chamber pressure to rise and closes the main valve, and the outlet pressure no longer rises.
When the valve outlet pressure drops to the pilot valve set pressure, the pilot valve opens and the control chamber drains downstream. Since the displacement of the pilot valve system is greater than the water intake of the needle valve, the pressure in the main valve control chamber drops. The inlet pressure opens the main valve. In the steady state, the control room has the same water and drainage, the main valve opening is unchanged, and the outlet pressure is stable.
The outlet pressure can be set by adjusting the pilot spring.
